Choosing a name for a business or nonprofit organization is an important and challenging
part of the formation process, but before putting together a list, it’s important to understand
the naming rules that apply in your state. This guide details entity name restrictions in all
50 states.
A domestic entity, and a foreign filing entity with registration under Article 7, may not have a name that contains any word phrase that indicates or implies that the entity is engaged in a business that the entity is not authorized by law to pursue.

In addition, nonprofit corporations may not contain the name of any public park, playground, or other public facility together with the word "benefit", "benevolent", "endowment", "philanthropic", "foundation", or "fund". Name may not deceptively or falsely imply it is organized for the financial benefit of a park, playground, or other public facility unless the articles of incorporation provide that the revenues of such corporation or organization are dedicated to the exclusive or sole benefit of such park, playground, or other public facility and the governing authority of the governmental entity that owns or operates the park, playground, or public facility, by written consent, agrees to the corporate use of the name of the park, playground, or public facility.
