Kansas Construction Licensing

Contractors must maintain general liability insurance in an amount of no less than $1,000,000.

Class A licenses entitle the holder to construct, remodel, repair, demolish any structure and perform work described in Class D, Building Specialties of framing and concrete.

Contractors must maintain general liability insurance in an amount of no less than $1,000,000.

Class B licenses entitle the holder to construct, remodel, repair, demolish any structure not exceeding 3 stories in height and perform work described in Class D, Building Specialties of framing and concrete.

Contractors must maintain general liability insurance in an amount of no less than $1,000,000.

Sign Contractors, fence/shed contractors, utility contractors and concrete contractors are not required to have a Johnson County license, but are required to be licensed with the City for work which involves a permit and inspections.  A contractor license is not needed for other home improvement work that does not require a permit.

The following contractor classifications are required to have a current Johnson County Contractor License, as well as a Prairie Village Contractor License, to obtain permits and inspections:

General Contractor – Class A
Building Contractor – Class B
Residential Contractor – Class C
Electrical Contractor – DE
Plumbing Contractor– DP
Mechanical Contractor – DM
Swimming Pool Contractor – DS
Roofing Contractor – DR
Fire Protection Contractor – DF
Wood Framing Contractor – DW

If the firm is a corporate entity, provide evidence that the entity is in good standing. All corporate entities must provide proof of good standing from the Secretary of State of the state in which they are registered.

Every company except a company with an “inactive license” must keep in force a policy of general liability insurance, including completed operations coverage, meeting the program’s mandatory standards and when required by the laws of Kansas, worker’s compensation insurance.

The Class “A” License entitles the company to construct, remodel, repair, and demolish any structure. A Class “A” licensed company or the company’s full-time employees may perform framing, roofing, swimming pool construction, non-structural remodeling, tenant finish, or repairs of all structures, regardless of occupancy or height. The Class “A” license does not entitle the licensed company to perform HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or fire protection service or work.

Every licensed entity must have at least one responsible individual who will be known as the Qualifying Individual. The contractor can be the Qualifying Individual. Firms must have at least one Qualified Individual who is a full time employee (full time is defined as working 30 hours per week or more) of the company. The Qualifying Individual must possess either “1” or “2”, as follows: 

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Science, or Construction Management from an ABET or ACCE accredited program. Landscape Architecture degrees do not qualify. An official transcript establishes proof of degree qualification.
 
A certified test score 75% or higher, on a standard examination as approved by the Contractor License Review Board. Standard examination agencies are defined as the International Code Council (ICC) and Prometric or past subsidiaries of Educational Testing Services (ETS). For the Class “A” license we recognize the ICC Kansas Standard General Building Contractor (A) (Exam ID: K9A) or Prometric/ETS General Construction (Catalog Number 10142) exam. We will also consider without guarantee of approval the ICC National exams if it can be verified to have a 75% or higher score and the exam outline content precisely mirrors the outline content of ICC Exam ID: K9A

Confirm the identity of Qualified Individual and company owner with a government issued photo I.D.

Provide a digital photo of the Qualified Individual to contractor.licensing@jocogov.org . 

The Class “B” License shall entitle the holder thereof to construct, remodel, repair, and demolish all structures not exceeding three (3) stories in height. A Class “B” License allows the licensed company or the company’s full-time employees to perform framing, roofing, swimming pool construction, non-structural remodeling, tenant finish, or repairs of all structures subject to the height limitation. The Class “B” license does not entitle the licensed company to perform HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or fire protection service or work.

The Class “C” License shall entitle the holder thereof to construct, remodel, repair, and demolish single-family or duplex residences and buildings accessory thereto. A Class “C” License allows the licensed company or the company’s full-time employees to perform framing, roofing, swimming pool construction, non-structural remodeling, or repairs when associated with single-family and two-family dwellings, or structures accessory thereto. The Class “C” license does not entitle the licensed company to perform HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or fire protection service or work.

• Certificate of Liability insurance (at least $300,000 in General Liability) showing MABCD as the certificate holder.
• Worker's Compensation certificate of insurance (If you are not required by State law to have worker's compensation, please return a signed and notarized copy of the workman's compensation waiver.)
• Auto certificate of insurance (If you are not required by State law to have business coverage for your fleet, please return a signed and notarized copy of the auto insurance waiver.)
