City of East Chicago Contractor License

  • Certificate of Insurance submitted required to be original form to include policy numbers, and stipulating “City of East Chicago, Indiana, 4525 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN” as Certificate Holder. 
  • Workmen’s compensation covering all employees on any work done within the City of East Chicago.
  • An independent contractor not including Workmen’s Compensation on insurance policy is required to apply for an
    “Independent Contractor Affidavit of Exemption” from the Indiana State Workmen’s Compensation Board (800-824-2667). Form is available at the Building Department office.
  • Public liability insurance in the amount of not less than $100,000 for one person or $300,000 for one accident.
  • Property damage insurance in the amount of not less than $50,000.
  • Such workmen’s compensation, public liability and property damage insurance shall be kept in full force and effect during the entire licensed period and certificates to that effect annually.
Bond Requirements:
  • Surety bond in the sum of $5,000 payable to the City is required to be recorded with the: Lake County Recorder’s Office 2293 N. Main Street, Crown Point, IN 46307 (219) 755-3730.
  • Bond accepted stipulating “All Cities, Towns and Municipalities in Lake County, IN.”
  • Such bonds shall be resubmitted each year before renewal of the license is granted.

How to Apply:
  1. Review chapter 1 of the Allen County Indiana Building Department Rules and Regulations (Eighteenth Edition, Effective 11/10/2023) (PDF) to determine the type of license you wish to pursue.
  2. Complete the correct Exam Sponsorship application.
  3. All applications require a $25 Sponsorship Fee. This fee is only payable by check or money order.
  4. Mail the application and sponsorship fee to:

  5. Once the application and sponsorship fee has been received you will be contacted by our Licensing Specialist via mail regarding scheduling the exam indicated on the application. If there any questions or concerns regarding your application you will be contacted via email.

This license is held by those who have the knowledge and skill to install, repair, alter, or add to or change any electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus', raceways, conduit, or any part thereof which generates, transmits, transforms, or utilizes electrical energy in any form for light, heat, power, or communications (Class 1 Structures).

Requirement Notes:

Any person desiring to be licensed must first pass an exam specified by the Licensing and Registration Board for the relevant license category.


The Board may enter into reciprocity agreements with other governmental entities that are deemed, by the Board, to have licensing regulations equivalent to those set forth by Monroe County.

Once this application has been received by the Board, the applicant must attend any upcoming Board meeting to request approval of a license. The electrician requesting the license must be the applicant.

Monroe County Residential Master Electrician License

This license is held by those who have the skills of a master electrician, as they apply to installations in one and two family residences (Class 2 Structures).
