Indiana Engineering Company Licenses

Indiana Engineering Firm License

Not required



Engineering Firm licensure is not required on the State level in Indiana.

Indiana does not issue firm licenses at the state level and no longer requires professional corporations to obtain a certificate of registration before incorporating.

Ownership Requirements:

Business Corporations:

  • Officers and directors need not be licensed, but the corporation must appoint an Indiana licensed individual to be responsible for all professional activities undertaken by the firm.

Professional Corporations:

  • For Indiana formed PCs, the directors and all the officers other than the secretary and the treasurer must be licensed engineers.

Limited Liability Companies:

  • Members need not be licensed, but the LLC must appoint an Indiana licensed individual to be responsible for all professional activities undertaken by the firm.

Partnerships:

  • Partners need not be licensed, but the partnership must appoint an Indiana licensed individual to be responsible for all professional activities undertaken by the firm.

Indiana Geology Firm License

Not required



Geoscience Firm licensure is not required on the State level in Indiana.

  2. the date the seal is being affixed;

directly adjacent to the seal, but not across the seal. As used in this subsection, "electronic signature" means an electronic sound, symbol, or process attached to or logically associated with an electronic record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the electronic record.

  • Name Change Documentation: Documentation of any legal name change if your name differs from that on any of your documents. Documentation may include a copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree.  Please upload at the time of application or log back into your account and use the License Update option.
  • Verification of State Licensure(s) - Upload verification(s) from the state where you passed your exam(s) and all states where you hold or held licensure.
  • Official Transcript//or Evaluation of Foreign Degree - Upload official transcripts from your college and/or university from where you received your degree.
    • Supplemental Form and Work Experience - Form 50938 must be completed for Non-ABET accredited programs; technology degrees and foreign degree applicants. Please include all relevant education when completing the supplemental form. *Please note* Having a credential evaluation completed does not make the degree an EAC ABET accredited degree.
    • Evaluation of Foreign Degree - Any foreign degree must have an evaluation by NCEES (ncees.org or 864-654-6824) or any service that will meet the standards of the board to determine if your education meets Indiana's educational requirements.  This process must be done before the Board will review your application.
  • Examination - NCEES notification of passing PE exam.
  • References - Upload 5 reference letters, 3 of which must be from Professional Engineers. The references are to be completed by the reference on Form 2146.  The
  • Letter Regarding Engineer Applicant References can be provided to the references  to explain the requirement.  Please upload at the time of application or log back into your account and use the License Update option.
  • Part III of the Examination - Upload the Part III Exam and answer sheet for Professional Engineers has the directions to fulfill this requirement.

Learn about engineering licensing in other states:

Design Firm - Engineering firm registration is sometimes grouped with architecture and land surveying on a single “design firm” application form.

EI (Engineering Intern) - A term also used to describe an Engineer in Training.

EIT (Engineer in Training) - A professional designation granted upon having completed at least 3 years of school at an ABET-accredited university and having passed the FE exam.

FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) - An exam testing on basic engineering principles that is required to become an engineer in training.

PE (Professional Engineer or 'Principles and Practice in Engineering') - Means either Professional Engineer or refers to the Principles and Practice in Engineering exam that is a prerequisite for an engineering license.

Reciprocity - When a licensed engineer in one state can provide documentation (often an NCEES Record) to more easily apply for a license in another jurisdiction.

Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)
Accrediting board that sets standards for university programs in a variety of applied science disciplines.

American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC)
Engineering, architecture, and land surveying advocacy group.

American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
Organization that provides continuing education, professional conferences, and advocacy efforts to the civil engineering community.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Mechanical engineering organization that focuses on education and professional development.

Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC)
Reviews accreditation requirements and makes final decisions regarding the accreditation process.

National Council of Examiners for Engineering & Surveying (NCEES)
Develops, administers, and scores the exams used for engineering licenses.

National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE)
NSPE is an advocacy group for professional engineers.
