General Business License Requirements for Washington.

Business licenses are often required of business entities, regardless of their products and services. This page provides an overview of business license requirements in Washington.

Ownership Requirements:

If your business structure will be one of the following, you must file with the Washington Secretary of State before filing the Business License Application:

  • Washington (Domestic) Corporation
  • Washington (Domestic) Partnership
  • Washington (Domestic) Liability Company
  • Washington (Domestic) Limited Liability Partnership
Notes:

You need a license if you meet 1 or more of the following criteria:

  • Your business grosses $12,000 or more per year.
  • You’re doing business using a name other than your full legal name.
  • You plan to hire employees within the next 90 days.
  • You sell a product or provide a service that is taxable.
  • Your business has specialty licenses available through the Business Licensing Service.

Notes:
  • The City of Burien requires a license for all businesses, including Airbnb and bed and breakfasts, located within city limits or conducting business within city limits. If you are not sure if you will do business within the city limits, contact the city at (206) 241-4647 directly before you apply.
  • If you will have more than one business located on a single property, you must complete a separate application for each business.
  • License fee is determined by number of employees who work within the city limits of Burien.
  • Employee definition: any individual, whether employed full-time or part-time, located within the city, either permanently or temporarily, on the payroll of the business at the time of application for the business license.
