Louisiana Commercial Contractor License

Financial Requirements:

Applicants must demonstrate a net worth of at least $10,000 if they plan to perform projects in the amount of $50,000 or more.

Notes:

A Commercial license is required for:

  • Commercial projects with a value of $50,000 or more (including labor and materials) when the property is to be used for commercial purposes. Commercial purpose is any construction project except residential structures with no more than four incorporated or attached dwelling units.
  • Subcontractors/Specialty Trades for commercial projects with a value of $50,000 or more.
  • Electrical/Mechanical/Plumbing projects exceeding $10,000 including labor and materials.
  • Asbestos, Hazardous Waste, Lead Based Paint Abatement/Removal, and Underground Storage Tanks projects with a value of $1 or more.

Required Attachments:
  • Names, social security numbers, dates of birth, and federal tax IDs (if an entity) for the applicant and each owner, officer, partner, member, or manager listed as Key Individuals and for each qualifying party
  • Addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses for the applicant and each qualifying party listed on the application
  • Financial Statement Form
  • Articles of Incorporation/Organization/Partnership Agreement
  • Copy of Credential(s) – for classification(s) that require a Credential in lieu of a trade exam
  • Certificates of Insurance (must be submitted by your insurance agent by emailing insurance@lslbc.louisiana.gov)

Registration Renewal

Due:
  • Expires on the anniversary date of initial registration. Licensees may renew for either 1, 2, or 3 years at a time. 
  • Applicants are given one year from the date the application is received to meet all requirements. If all requirements are not met within the one-year timeframe, the application and fees will be written off and the applicant will be required to submit a new application, documents, and fees.

  • Financial Statement
    • Required for all license applicants (commercial, residential and mold remediation
  • Articles of Incorporation/Organization/Partnership Agreement 
    • Required for all business entities applying for a license (residential, commercial and mold remediation
    • Not required for those applying in their individual name or those applying for a home improvement registration
      • Provide copy of Articles of Incorporation (if Corporation/Inc), By-Laws if one exists and any amendments made to the business name
      • Provide copy of Articles of Organization (if LLC), Operating Agreement if one exists and any amendments made to the business name
      • Provide copy of Partnership Agreement (if LP or GP) 
  • Copy of Credential(s) – for classification(s) that require a Credential in lieu of a trade exam
  • Verification of License form – this is for out-of-state companies requesting reciprocity from a reciprocal state for a commercial or residential license
    • Provide a copy of the Verification of License form that was completed by the reciprocal state
  • Certificates of Insurance
    • Required for all Residential, Home Improvement and Mold Remediation applicants
    • NOT required for commercial license applicants
    • Must be submitted by your insurance agent by email at application and at renewal of the license/registration. We cannot accept from the contractor. Certificates must be emailed from your insurance agent to insurance@lslbc.louisiana.gov.

Amendment
Disassociation of a Qualifying Party

Form:

Disassociation of a Qualifying Party from a Licensed Company and Adding A Qualifying Party to an Existing License

Agency Fee:

$120 per qualifying party exam/admin fee + $120 per qualifying party business and law fee.

Due:

If a qualifying party terminates employment with the licensee, the licensee must notify the board, in writing, within 30 days of the disassociation and another party must qualify within 60 days of the disassociation.

How to Apply:
  1. Submit the completed form called “Disassociation of a Qualifying Party” notifying the board of the disassociation of the qualifying party and the replacement qualifying party to be added.

  2. Submit the completed, initialed, signed and notarized form called “Application for Qualifying Party”.

  3. Submit required fees (as listed on the Disassociation of a Qualifying Party form)

Amendment
Change of Officers or Directors

Instructions:

Amending the officers and/or directors can be done through the standard renewal process. However, this is considered a structure change and an additional fee will apply.

Louisiana Home Improvement Contractor Registration

Insurance Requirements:

Proof of $100,000 of liability insurance is required.

Notes:

A Home Improvement registration is required for the following home improvement contracting activities of $7,500 or more but is less than $50,000, including labor and materials:

  • “Home improvement contracting” means the reconstruction, alteration, renovation, repair, modernization, conversion, improvement, removal, or demolition, or the construction of an addition to any preexisting residential structure which building is used or designed to be used as a residence or dwelling unit, or to structures which are adjacent to such residence or building where the project value is $7,500 or more but is less than $50,000. Does not include the performance of any structural work that is integral to the structural integrity of any new or existing structure including but not limited to footings, foundation, outside walls, skeleton, bearing columns and interior load bearing walls, and floor slabs. Does not include services rendered gratuitously. Does include roofing work within the dollar limits, excluding structural modifications or repairs.
  • Home improvement contracting projects which exceed $50,000, including labor and materials, require a Residential license with the Residential Construction classification.
  • Those with an active Residential License with Residential Construction and/or Commercial License with Building Construction are exempt from the Home Improvement Registration.

Insurance Requirements:

Proof of $100,000 of liability insurance is required.

Notes:

A Residential license is required for:

  • Residential Construction exceeding $50,000 (including labor and materials) of any residential structure. Residential structure is defined as a building or structure that is used primarily for occupancy by a person as a residence. Such structures or buildings include but are not limited to single family dwellings, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes which are not more than three floors in height and structures that are part of or adjacent to the building or structures to be used as a residence.
  • Home Improvements projects on existing residential structures exceeding $50,000.
  • A licensed Residential Construction contractor may bid on or contract to build or repair residential swimming pools but must use a subcontractor holding a license with the Residential Swimming Pools classification if they do not hold this classification. This is required for residential swimming pools projects where the cost of labor and materials exceeds $7,500.
