Utah Architect License

    • Verify meeting licensure education requirements through one of the methods below:
      • Accredited Graduation: If you completed an NAAB or CACB accredited program, have official transcripts sent directly from the school to DOPL.
      • Foreign Education: If you completed an architectural education program in a foreign country, you must contact EESA for a “Comprehensive Evaluation” and have it sent directly to DOPL. EESA can be reached by calling (202) 783-2007 or visit their website.
      • Licensed Practice as a Principal: If you have been licensed as an architect and practiced as a principal for 5 of the last 7 years in another state, submit the “Verification of Architectural Experience as a Principal” form located in this application. You must also have the state(s) you are verifying principal experience from submit verification of your license to Utah. Please contact the state you are
        licensed in on how to request verification.
  • Provide verification of meeting licensure exam requirements through one of the methods below:
    • Passed all divisions of the ARE in Utah.
    • Passed all division of the ARE in a state other than Utah and request the state to send verification of
      your scores to Utah.
  • Provide one of the items below:
    • Verification of licensure in another state.
    • Verification of completing AXP (Formally IDP). 

Reciprocal Registration

  • Ownership
    • For the purpose of verifying the company’s identity, the applicant must demonstrate that at least 50% ownership proposed for the Utah license is the same as the license held in the jurisdiction being used for endorsement.
    • Additionally, no more than 50% of the company ownership may have changed within the last year. 
    • To apply by endorsement, you must submit official verification of your license, that includes documentation of ownership, with your completed application.
  • Qualified Individual
    • Must be licensed in Utah. 
    • Must be either a 20% owner if the firm or a W-2 employee in a management position in the firm.
    • Must meet one of each of the prelicensure qualifications, exam requirements, and experience requirements (page 4)
Before you Apply:
  • List all other licenses, registrations or certifications issued by any state which you now hold or have ever held in any profession
  • Report if within the last eight years, has the applicant, the proposed qualifier, any owner, or any prior entities for which these individuals have been involved, had any judgments, liens, taxes, or child support delinquencies levied against them
  • Report if within the last seven years has the applicant, the proposed qualifier, any owner or any prior entities for which these individuals have been involved, filed for bankruptcy
  • Provide proof of:
    • Worker Compensation Certificate (or Waiver)
    • Workforce Services Unemployment Insurance Registration Nnumber
    • Utah State Tax Commission Withholding Tax Account Number
      • If exempt from Utah withholdings by doing business in Utah for 60 days or less, please submit written exemption approval from Utah Tax Commission.
    • Provide all of the above or provide a signed contract with an approved Professional Employer Organization (PEO) in lieu of the requirements
    • If you do not currently have employees and don't intend to have employees within the foreseeable future, you may elect to defer providing this information
  • Provide proof of general liability insurance
    • The minimum required coverage is $100,000 for each incident and $300,000 in total. 
    • Must cover the scope of work for the licensee for the entire duration of active licensure (no exclusions)
    • DOPL’s name and address must be listed as the certificate holder: DOPL, 160 E 300 S, P.O. Box 146741, Salt Lake City, Utah 84114.
    • The insurance certificate must be included with the application. It may NOT be email or faxed to the Division as it will delay your application.
  • Provide the name, residential address, date of birth, social security number, email, and phone number for each owner

  • If your firm is owned by another entity, provide: 
    • Audited financial statement. 
    • A list of all officers and directors (name, residential address, and phone number
    • Evidence or documentation that shows that the applicant is owned by the parent company.
    • If layered ownership, provide a diagram that explains how ownership is established.

  • Official transcripts documenting completion of an EAC/ABET accredited program. Transcripts are
    considered official when mailed directly to DOPL from the school or when delivered in a sealed envelope
    with the school's stamp/seal on the envelope flap. Transcripts may also be sent via secure email from the
    school's registrar office to b5@utah.gov.
  • NCEES Credential Evaluation: If your engineering education program was completed in a foreign country,
    contact NCEES Credentials Evaluations at www.ncees.org or 1-800-464-7650. Please have NCEES send
    your evaluation directly to DOPL.
  • Verification of Engineering Experience as a Principal. Licensed Practice as a Principal: If you have been
    licensed as an engineer and practiced as a principal for 5 of the last 7 years in another state, submit the
    “Verification of Engineering Experience as a Principal” form. You must also have the state(s) you are
    verifying principal experience from submit verification of your license to Utah.
  • Verification of passing the NCEES FE and PE. If you passed the NCEES FE and/or the NCEES PE exam in another
    state, you must request an official verification of your scores and license (if applicable) to be sent directly to Utah. If
    you tested in Utah, we will be able to access your scores directly from NCEES.
  • One of the items below:
    • Verification of licensure in another state verifying licensure for the time documented on your Verification of
      Experience as a Principal.
    •  Verification of Experience form documenting one of the pathways listed below. All employers must complete
      a separate form. If your experience was obtained as a licensed engineer in another state, you must submit
      verification of your licensure from that state.
    • 4 years of supervised work experience if you hold an EAC/ABET accredited bachelor’s degree;
    •  3 years if you hold an EAC/ABET accredited master’s degree and your undergraduate degree was earned in an
      EAC/ABET accredited program;
    • 2 years if you hold a doctorate degree in engineering and your undergraduate degrees were earned in an
      EAC/ABET accredited program
