Ohio Commercial Electrical Contractor License

Insurance Requirements:
  • Contractor Liability Insurance in an amount not less than $500,000
  • The certificate holder must read as Ohio Construction Licensing Board 6606 Tussing Road, Reynoldsburg OH 43068
Notes:

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or a legal alien (must provide proof)
  • Have been a tradesperson in the type of licensed trade for which the application is filed for not less than 5 years immediately prior to the date of application OR be a currently registered engineer in Ohio with 3 years of business experience in the construction industry in the trade for which the application is filed
  • Have never been convicted of a disqualifying offense as defined in S.B. 337

Instructions:
  1. Submit application and required documentation to the Ohio Construction Licensing Board (OCILB) for approval
  2. Once the application has been approved by the Board, candidates must obtain a BCI and FBI Background Check
  3. Approved candidates will be provided with a PSI Candidate Information Bulletin which will contain detailed instructions on how to schedule an exam
  4. Individuals who receive a notice advising them of a passing status for both sections of the exam can obtain a state license by mailing in the license fee and required documentation

The following documents are required to be submitted with the initial application to the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board: 

  • Proof of trade experience working underneath a licensed contractor on projects requiring a permit during the 5 years directly preceding the application
    • Provide at least 1 permit for each of the last five years with the applicable license name and number of the contractor the work was performed under
  • 5 years of tax records (cross out social security numbers) or Schedule C Form 1040

The following documents are required to be submitted once an applicant has passed the required exam: 

  • Copy of exam results
  • Certificate of Liability Insurance
  • Check for license fee due
