Eligible Entity Types:

Ownership Requirements:

Business Corporations:

  • Officers and directors need not be licensed, but the practice of engineering must be carried on only by engineers licensed in Maine.

Professional Corporations:

  • A majority of the directors of a Maine PC and all of its officers, except the clerk, secretary and treasurer, must be licensed in a professional service performed by the firm.
  • All shareholders must either be licensed in a professional service performed by the firm or otherwise qualified under 13 MRS § 741.

Limited Liability Companies:

  • Members and managers need not be licensed, but the practice of engineering must be carried on only by engineers licensed in Maine.

Partnerships:

  • Partners need not be licensed, but the practice of engineering must be carried on only by engineers licensed in Maine.

Digital Signature Guidelines:

The Licensee’s signature and the date must accompany the seal. Effective signature may be an electronic signature as defined by 10 M.R.S.A. Section 9402. ("Electronic signature" means an electronic sound, symbol or process attached to or logically associated with a record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record.)

Digital Sealing Guidelines:

Each Licensee is authorized to obtain a seal of the size and design prescribed by the Board. The seal may be an embossed seal, a rubber stamp or an electronically generated image.

Sealed documents may be transmitted electronically.

Initial Registration

Instructions:
  1. Completed online application and payment of the application and licensure fee.
  2. Official transcripts sent directly to the board from your school showing a four-year degree in (Maine EI skip this--we have it):Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET-accredited engineering or engineering technology program or equivalent (Note: Equivalency is determined against the NCEES Education Standard); or
    Bachelor of Science in engineering, engineering technology or an allied science (i.e. Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.).
  3. Passing result on the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam (Maine EI skip this--we have it).Note: If your FE result is prior to 2014, have an Exam/Licensure Verification Form (PDF) or electronic verification sent directly to the board from the jurisdiction where you took the FE exam.
    Passing result on the NCEES Principles and Practices of Engineering examination. (May be taken at any point after passing the NCEES FE Exam.)
  4. Engineering Employment Verification Forms (PDF) Sent directly to the board by the verifier. Experience required: accredited--4 yrs; non-accredited or related science--8 yrs. 
  5. PE Reference Form (PDF) References send the form directly to the board. You need 5 references. At least 3 must be from licensed PEs--they are not required to be from Maine or in your discipline.
  6. Your license will be granted upon completion of licensure requirements.

Reciprocal Registration

Instructions:
  • Applicants for comity licensure as a Professional Engineer who hold a current NCEES Record must:
    • Pay NCEES to transmit your NCEES Record to Maine;
    • Complete the online application and payment process.
Filing Method:

Online and all documents in support of your application should be emailed directly to the board at professional.engineers@maine.gov

Agency Fee:

$50 application fee + $120 licensure fee

Required Attachments:
  • Proof of an active license in good standing as a Professional Engineer in an equivalent U.S. or foreign jurisdiction and passing results on the NCEES FE and PE exams. Proof should include completed Exam/Licensure Verification Form (PDF) or NCEES electronic verification sent directly to the board from the jurisdiction where the applicant took the FE exam and PE exam and received initial licensure, as well as from the jurisdiction of current licensure, if different;
  • Engineering Employment Verification Forms (PDF) sent directly to the board from the employers;
  • PE Reference Form (PDF) sent directly to the board from each of five references familiar with your work and character, three of whom must be licensed PEs;
  • Official transcripts sent directly from the college or university showing a four-year degree in one of the following:Bachelor of Science degree in an ABET-accredited engineering or engineering technology program or equivalent (Note: Equivalency is determined against the NCEES Education Standard); or
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering, engineering technology or an allied science (i.e. Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.).
