Vermont Architect License

Initial Registration

This section applies to architects that are applying for a license in Vermont for the first time.

Instructions:

NCARB Certificate 

1.Completeonline application andpay non-refundable application fee.

2.National Council of architectural registration boards certificate officially transmitted by NCARB electronically

 

Examination

1. Complete online application and pay non refundable application fee
2. Scanned copy of Employer Reference Form signed by your supervisor(s). This is required in addition to the AXP record.
3.Official complete AXP record submitted by NCARB.
4. Official school transcript verifying your education must be submitted directly by your institution

Option 1 –hold a NAAB accredited professional degree and have documented at least 2/3 of the required AXP requirement with NCARB.

Option 2 -For admittance to take the A.R.E. exam without an NAAB accredited professional degree, your years of education and experience acceptable to the Board must total 9 years (See 2.2.1.2.2 below).•Applicants may be allowed to begin taking the ARE exam with the completion of at least 8 years of experience of the total 9 years required and with at least 2/3 of the AXP requirement documented with NCARB.

Reciprocal Registration

This section applies to architects licensed in another state that are looking for reciprocal licensure in Vermont.

Instructions:

For endorsement or reciprocity: To qualify, an applicant must be licensed or certified in good standing in another state or
jurisdiction in which the standards and qualifications required for regulation in that jurisdiction are substantially
equivalent to Vermont's. IPAL is accepted with this path to licensure as long as all other VT licensure qualifications have been met.

2. Enter all states where you have been or are currently licensed.
3. Verification of your licensure submitted from your original state of licensure and from your most recent state of licensure,
if different.
4. Official school transcript verifying your education must be submitted directly by your
institution.
5. Scanned copy of Employer Reference Form signed by your supervisor(s). This is required in addition to the AXP record.
6. Official complete AXP record submitted by NCARB

Registration Renewal

This section applies to architects that are already licensed in Vermont and need to renew their license.

Vermont Architecture Firm License

Not required



Architecture Firm licensure is not required on the State level in Vermont.

Firm licenses are not issued at the state level, however, a licensed individual must oversee all architectural work. Firms should consult board rules and state statutes before doing business.

26 V.S.A. § 203

Eligible Entity Types:
  • Business Corporations
  • Professional Corporations
  • Limited Liability Companies
  • Professional Limited Liability Companies
  • Partnerships
Ownership Requirements:

Business Corporations:

  • Officers and directors need not be licensed, but the corporation must have at least one employee who is a Vermont licensed architect and who is responsible for the firm's practice of architecture in Vermont.

Professional Corporations:

  • All of the shareholders, at least 1/2 of the directors, and all of the officers (excluding the secretary and treasurer) must be licensed in a professional service performed by the firm.

Limited Liability Companies:

  • Members and managers need not be licensed, but the LLC must have at least one employee who is a Vermont licensed architect and who is responsible for the firm's practice of architecture in Vermont.

Professional Limited Liability Companies:

  • At least 1/2 of the managers and all of the members (excluding the secretary and treasurer) must be licensed in a professional service performed by the firm.

Partnerships:

  • Partners need not be licensed, but the partnership must have at least one employee who is a Vermont licensed architect and who is responsible for the firm's practice of architecture in Vermont.
