Alabama Prime Contractor License

Financial Requirements:

Applicants must have a minimum net worth and working capital of $10,000.

Insurance Requirements:

Proof of current liability insurance is required.

Notes:

General contractor is defined as one who, for a fixed price, commission, fee, or wage undertakes to construct or superintend or engage in the construction, alteration, maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, remediation, reclamation, or demolition of any building, highway, sewer, structure, site work, grading, paving or project or any improvement in the State of Alabama where the cost of the undertaking is $50,000 or more. This definition also includes one who, for a fixed price, commission, fee, or wage exceeding $5,000, undertakes to construct, superintend the construction of, repair, or renovate, any swimming pool, and anyone who shall engage in the construction, superintending of the construction, repair, or renovation of any swimming pool in the State of Alabama, where the cost of the undertaking exceeds $5,000.

Renewals are due annually by the end of the renewal month. Renewal months are based on the first letter of the company name:

 

  • 'I', 'J', 'K', and 'L' names renew during the month of March.
  • 'M' and 'N' names renew during the month of April.
  • 'O', 'P', 'Q', and 'R' names renew during the month of May.
  • 'S' names renew during the month of June.
  • 'T', 'U', 'V', 'W', 'X', 'Y', and 'Z' names renew during the month of July.
  • 'G' and 'H' names renew during the month of August.
  • 'D', 'E', and 'F' names renew during the month of September.
  • 'C' names renew during the month of October.
  • 'B' names renew during the month of November.
  • 'A' names renew during the month of December.
Before you Apply:
  • Current Print Screen of the entity registration from the Alabama Secretary of State's Office (Corporations, LP, LLP, and LLC entities only)
  • Proof of Current Liability Insurance. The certificate holder must be listed as: Alabama License Board for General Contractors, 445 Dexter Ave, Suite 3060, Montgomery, AL 36104. 
  • Alabama Certification Card(s), if applicable, from the appropriate Alabama State Board 
  • A current Financial Statement no more than one year old at the time of submission. (Audited, Reviewed, or Complied financial statement in accordance with US GAAP prepared by a Certified Public Accountant or Licensed Public Accountant approved by the Board

When the qualifying party terminates employment with the licensee, the State Licensing Board for General Contractors must be notified in writing, by the licensee,within 30 days of the disassociation and another party must qualify within 60 days of the disassociation.

Notes:

Use the qualifying party form to start the process of establishing a new qualifying party. If a qualifying party is leaving, also send a letter to the board explaning the change.
