Madison Business License - Contractors

Insurance Requirements:

General liability insurance with the City of Madison listed as a certificate holder. Minimum coverage is $100,000 for bodily injury for any one person, $200,000 for any one occurrence, and $100,000 for damage to the property of others.

Agency Fee:

$14 application fee + a license fee determined by estimated gross receipts:

  • $65 for gross receipts of less than $25,000
  • $125 for gross receipts of at least $25,000 but less than $100,000
  • $300 for gross receipts of at least $100,000 but less than $1,000,000
  • $450 for gross receipts of at least $1,000,000 but less than $5,000,000
  • $600 for gross receipts of at least $5,000,000 but less than $10,000,000
  • Plus, an additional amount equal to 1/40 of one percent of all gross receipts over $10,000,000
Required Attachments:
  • All contractors or subcontractors doing business within the City of Madison must provide a current certificate of general liability insurance with the City of Madison listed as a certificate holder. Minimum coverage is $100,000 for bodily injury for any one person, $200,000 for any one occurrence, and $100,000 for damage to the property of others.
  • Commercial general contractors must provide a copy of their license issued by the State of Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors.
  • Residential general contractors must provide a copy of their license issued by the State of Alabama Home Builders License Board.
  • Plumbers and gasfitters must provide a copy of their card issued by the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gasfitters Board.
  • Heating and air conditioning contractors must provide a copy of their card issued by the State of Alabama Board for Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors.
  • Landscapers must provide us a copy of their professional services permit issued by the State of Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries.
  • Burglar or fire alarm contractors must provide us with a copy of the license issued by the State of Alabama Electronic Security Board.
  • Fire sprinkler subcontractors must provide us with a copy of their State of Alabama Fire Marshal's permit.
  • Electricians must provide us with a State of Alabama Electrical Card.
  • Swimming pool contractors must provide a copy of their license issued by the State of Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors if the contract amount exceeds $5,000.
  • All subcontractors doing a contract amount of $50,000 or more on one commercial project must have a license issued by the State of Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors.
