May 15 is a big deadline for charitable solicitation registration renewals and IRS Form 990 filings. For nonprofits operating on a calendar tax year, Form 990 is due May 15. Currently, 13 states also require those organizations to file their fundraising renewals on May 15. Nonprofits on a June 30 fiscal year that have taken the maximum 990 and fundraising renewal extensions also face filing and renewal requirements in May.

The concurrent deadlines for these two filings can pose challenges, since fundraising registration renewals require much of the information collected for the 990, and some states require a completed copy of the 990 to be included. Organizations that complete their 990 filings with extra lead time may be able to file everything by May 15, but some nonprofits may need more time.

To make sure you’re prepared, be sure to review the renewal deadlines in the states where your charity is registered to fundraise. You’ll find all the information you need in our online Fundraising Compliance Guide. After you’ve identified the states where you have renewals coming due, you may be able to apply for extensions in some states. Some states may require documentation of a 990 extension from the IRS.
