Each year in December, nonprofits and donors celebrate a day of generosity known as #GivingTuesday. This coming Tuesday, May 5, 2020, we celebrate an additional global day of giving and unity. This event, #GivingTuesdayNow, joins people everywhere, calling on them to support the nonprofits, small businesses, and first responders who have made monumental sacrifices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organizers of #GivingTuesdayNow call this day “an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.”  The mission is simple: to leverage generosity to “unite and heal communities in good and bad,” and especially now. Even in quarantine, we can demonstrate a social connection for one another, such as:

  • Supporting healthcare workers by donating supplies, advocating for them, and staying home.
  • Giving to the organizations that you love most and encouraging others to give – each donation matters and nonprofits need our support.
  • Helping out small businesses by buying gift cards or writing an online review.
  • Combating loneliness by reaching out to a neighbor, relative, seniors or veterans.

For nonprofits participating in #GivingTuesdayNow and other global days of giving, here are some tips:

  • Ensure your website is updated with #GivingTuesdayNow logos and other branding.
  • Keep your nonprofit’s profile on rating sites like Charity Navigator and Guidestar up to date.
  • Ensure that you’ve registered to solicit contributions in each state where it’s required.
  • Take steps to demonstrate transparency with your donors, such as including disclosure statements and honest, compelling messaging on your solicitation materials.

The scale of COVID-19 exceeds any event in recent memory. We each know of nonprofits, individuals, businesses, and restaurants impacted by the outbreak. Truly, we are all in this together. From all of us at Harbor Compliance, we wish you good health, knowing that our collective generosity on #GivingTuesdayNow and every day will see us through these challenging times.
