What are your duties as a Compliance Specialist?

Much of my work revolves around nonprofit formation. I help clients navigate the process, including preparing and filing articles of incorporation, creating bylaws, and obtaining 501(c)(3) approvals. My days consist of communicating with clients about their projects, preparing their documents, and answering any questions they have. The organizations we serve have diverse missions and range from small grassroots organizations to large foundations, so I get to work with people who are supporting a wide variety of causes.

What led you to specialize in nonprofit compliance?

I love helping charities! My personal mission is to promote educated and effective philanthropy, and I get to do that every day. Harbor Compliance is helping to advance philanthropy in a way that is very cost-efficient and effective. It’s nice to be able to draw on my legal background, while serving nonprofits within a technology company that’s on the leading edge. In my role here, I get to deliver the affordable, streamlined solutions our clients need so they can quickly get their organizations formed and begin fulfilling their missions.

What are some current trends you’re noticing in the nonprofit sector?

In terms of new charities being formed, I’ve recently seen more nonprofits providing relief to veterans and many new organizations focused on offering affordable mental health services in underserved areas. In philanthropy, more donors are using donor-advised funds as a funding vehicle, and we’re also seeing foundations continue to place greater emphasis on “mission investments” in which the projects are expected to produce measurable social benefits.

What inspires you to get going in the morning?

I enjoy what I do so much, and the staff members here at Harbor Compliance are so amazing, that my job just never feels like “work.” I like the energy of our company. We have great people and a great mission – everyone is really committed to working together to do what’s best for our clients.

What has been the most unexpected aspect of this job?

The power of the technology, not only the software we offer our clients, but also what we have at our disposal as employees. As a company, we work very hard to be efficient and we use amazing software to do that.

What are you doing when you’re not helping nonprofits with their regulatory needs?

Spending time with my husband, and our dog, Tastykake.

What’s one thing you’re willing to spend way too much on?

Cooking. My husband and I are both avid cooks. We spend a good amount of our time and our resources on cooking new things. We bought an Instant Pot for Christmas and our Valentine’s Day presents to one another were cookbooks. I’m originally from Texas, so “old Texas barbeque” is one of the favorites in our house, and my husband has become a real barbeque expert now.

What’s your workplace nickname?

Googly – my sister was on staff at the first law firm I worked at, and she dubbed me Googly. It kind of caught on once my coworkers found out I can find almost anything on Google in a matter of seconds!

What’s your favorite holiday, and why?

I have two. The first is the 4th of July – I love the fireworks and my birthday’s the next day on the 5th! The second is National Pig Day. Pig Day is celebrated on March 1st and was invented in my hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Growing up, we would wear pig noses and eat hot dogs at a “pignic” at school to celebrate. Now it’s gotten more popular across the nation and there have even been Pig Day parades. It’s a lot of fun!

Katherine’s legal expertise and dedication to serving nonprofits make her an incredible asset to Harbor Compliance and our clients. We’re so glad to have her positivity, knowledge, and enthusiasm on our team!
