This is the first article in a series highlighting a valued member of the Harbor Compliance team. Get to know Sherry Amspacher, Compliance Specialist and Team Lead in our corporate filings department, as she shares some thoughts on the challenges of corporate filings, the thing that most surprised her about her job at Harbor Compliance, and a recent arrival that changed her life!

What does your job entail?

We manage everything that happens during the corporate lifecycle, from formation to dissolution. That includes routine work like foreign qualifications, annual reports, tax registrations, and appointments of our registered agent service. We also handle complex projects like dissolutions, conversions, domestications, and nationwide amendments to a corporate name.

What does a typical day look like for you?

There is no typical day! I have to constantly balance tasks for the team to ensure that filings are handled efficiently and effectively for our clients. Prioritizing is critical in this job to make sure that every deadline is met, every time. It’s our goal always to exceed client expectations.

I also have management duties such as hiring, training my team, and managing their workflows. Coaching my team and helping them develop in their careers is something I really enjoy.

What was the most unexpected aspect of this job for you?

The pace. I’ve been doing this kind of work for 30 years and the pace here is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. It’s fun and kind of addicting. You want to help move things along for your clients, you want to take some of the mundane things off their plates so they can focus on what they do best, running their business. There’s a lot of variety. You never get bored.

What is your ultimate vacation, past or planned?

We recently spent nine days on Kona, Hawaii, for our 25th anniversary. We didn’t have an itinerary. We just did what we wanted to. We drove across the island, visited coffee farms, visited Volcanoes National Park. We went to a luau for our anniversary, ate seafood and just had fun spending time together. We’re also planning a trip to Paris in February for Valentine’s Day.

What do you do when you’re not steering corporate filings through various regulatory agencies?

I am the ultimate soccer mom. My sons are out of school, but my older son Troy played all the way through, and now he plays on a semi-pro team, so I go to his games year-round.

Coffee, tea, or other?

Iced tea. Strong Irish breakfast tea. And Hint infused water. I don’t drink coffee.

People at work would probably never guess that you . . .

I once had a summer job as a corn detassler in Indiana, which was a challenge because I’m so short. Basically I had to hold my arms over my head all day.

What’s your workplace nickname?
I don’t have one at work, but my latest nickname is Gigi. I just became a grandmother on November 7 with the birth of Landon Isaiah Amspacher. My younger son Nate wanted to know what the kids should call me, and we decided on Gigi.

One thing you’re willing to spend way too much on . . .

Fabric. I quilt; I’ve been doing it for two or three years now, and I’ve finished two quilts, one for my father-in-law and one a family scrapbook-style quilt. I’m working on one now for my grandson. I guess it will be more of a one-year quilt.

Three guilty pleasures?

Watching How to Get Away With Murder, doughnuts, and fabric shopping.

Favorite thing a client ever said to you:

“You just made my day.”
